Snooker in N.Ireland

I currently play in the East Tyrone Snooker League for St Patricks Hall Snooker team. Individual competitions take place throughout the season under the watchful eye of Norrie McCaughey. Thursday night is match night and the hall is still supported well by local players in the vicinity, none more so than snooker professional Patrick Wallace (below), my team mate and overall good guy. With regards to other leagues I have participated in recently, it is disappointing to see the Cookstown Snooker League now dwindled to a small individual league format when at one stage it was one of the best leagues in Northern Ireland. I have no doubt that this can be revitalised in the coming months and will do everything I can to support it.

On the national front snooker in Northern Ireland currently has two associations to choose from, with ranking tournaments taking place on various Sundays throughout the snooker season. The main and sports council recognised Northern Ireland Billiards & Snooker Association has been at the forefront of the local game for decades, and has witnessed home grown talent go on to bigger and better things. However the association has a fast growing little brother in the guise of the newly formed Northern Ireland Cue Sports Players Association. It will be interesting to see in the long term if both organisations can co-exist but given the limited number of snooker clubs and players in the province it seems unlikely.Time will tell.
